Maria Edelstain Goudeli and the reception of Montessori education in Greece

Abstract

Maria Montessori’s work was spread throughout the world in a vast number of countries. In Greece, it was first applied in 1930’s by Maria Edelstain-Goudeli, a pioneer of the Montessori education in Greece. The present study aims to unfold the history of Edelstain-Goudeli, while examining the social, political, historical, and cultural environment of the time. It is important for the pedagogical community worldwide to investigate how any ‘alternative’ educational system is established in a country without prior experience, especially since up to this day, the Greek education system has been very centralized, in terms of organization and administration. Edelstain-Goudeli had to overcome the dominant intellectual traditions and political and educational institutions of Greece, in order to transfuse to the Greek society the Montessori educational system. The process is situated within the framework of the ‘theory of reception’ of a scientific theory in a country of ‘scientific periphery’. The study also attempts to reveal the personality of Edelstain-Goudeli and identify stimuli and motivations behind her efforts and decisions. In the Theoretical Framework I briefly present the Montessori pedagogical method, its basic principles, and an overview of its evolutionary history. I also include the biography of Maria Edelstain Goudeli, and an account on the ‘theory of reception’. In the Discussion I unfold the life and work of Maria Edelstain Goudeli in relation to the historical, political, and educational evolvements of Greece and Europe, attempting to make correlations and investigate the causalities that led to the establishment of the Montessori method in Greece.

El trabajo de María Montessori se extendió por todo el mundo en una gran cantidad de países. En Grecia, fue aplicado por primera vez en la década de 1930 por Maria Edelstain- Goudeli, pionera de la educación Montessori en Grecia. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo desplegar la historia de Edelstain-Goudeli, al tiempo que examina el entorno social, político, histórico y cultural de la época. Es importante que la comunidad pedagógica de todo el mundo investigue cómo se establece cualquier sistema educativo "alternativo" en un país sin experiencia previa, especialmente porque hasta el día de hoy, el sistema educativo griego ha estado muy centralizado, en términos de organización y administración. Edelstain- Goudeli tuvo que superar las tradiciones intelectuales dominantes y las instituciones políticas y educativas de Grecia, para transfundir a la sociedad griega el sistema educativo Montessori. El proceso se sitúa en el marco de la “teoría de recepción” de una teoría científica en un país de “periferia científica”. El estudio también intenta desvelar la personalidad de Edelstain-Goudeli e identificar estímulos y motivaciones detrás de sus esfuerzos y decisiones. En el Marco Teórico, presento brevemente el método pedagógico Montessori, sus principios básicos y una descripción general de su historia evolutiva. También incluyo la biografía de Maria Edelstain Goudeli y un relato sobre la “teoría de la recepción”. En la Discusión expongo la vida y obra de Maria Edelstain Goudeli en relación con la evolución histórica, política y educativa de Grecia y Europa, intentando hacer correlaciones e investigar las causalidades que llevaron al establecimiento del método Montessori en Grecia.
