El conill és un animal idoni per a la producció de carn degut a les seves capacitats productives i les característiques de la seva carn. Tot i això, la cria i consum de conill ha patit una davallada en les últimes dècades. La selecció genètica enfocada a millorar el seu creixement i eficiència alimentaria tindria grans beneficis, ja que reduiria els costos econòmics en alimentació i l’impacte ambiental resultant de la producció de conill.
L’IRTA ha realitzat el primer estudi d’associació del genoma complet (GWAS) per caràcters d’eficiència alimentària i creixement individual. En aquest treball s’han estudiat gens candidats anotats en les regions genòmiques associades a aquests caràcters, amb l’objectiu d’identificar variants genètiques que puguin ser incloses en futurs programes de selecció genòmica. S’han seleccionat un total de nou gens candidats, dels quals s’ha seqüenciat la regió promotora proximal dels gens FTO, TP53INP1 i FEZF2 en 10 conills de la línia Caldes. S’ha identificat un total de 15 polimorfismes, set en el gen FTO, set en el gen TP53INP1 i un en el gen FEZF2. Finalment, el estudi in-silico de les regions promotores ha permès identificar la presència d’alguns d’aquests polimorfismes en llocs d’unió de factors de transcripció, modificant-ne la unió depenent del genotip de l’animal. La identificació d’aquests polimorfismes permetrà una futura validació funcional i la inclusió en futurs programes de selecció destinats a millorar el creixement i l’eficiència alimentaria dels conills.^^^^

Rabbit is an ideal animal for meat production due to its productive capacities and meat characteristics. However, rabbit production and consumption have decreased during the last decades. Genetic selection for feed efficiency and growth in rabbits would have great benefits because it would reduce economic costs and environmental footprints due to rabbit production.
Researchers at IRTA have performed the first genome-wide association study (GWAS) for feed efficiency and individual growth traits. In this final degree project, we have selected nine candidate genes annotated in the genomic regions associated with these traits, with the aim to identify genetic variants that could be included in future genomic selection programs. The proximal promoter region of FTO, TP53INP1, and FEZF2 genes was amplified and sequenced. A total of fifteen polymorphisms were detected, seven in FTO gene, seven in TP53INP1 gene, and one in FEZF2 gene. Finally, an in-silico study of the promoter regions of FTO and TP53INP1allowed the identification of some polymorphisms in transcription factors binding sites. The identification of these polymorphisms will allow future functional validation experiments and their inclusion in future genetic selection programs to improve growth and feed efficiency in rabbits.^^^^
