The Effects of Teaching Cultural Elements of the English Speaking Countries on a Foreign Language Classroom

Abstract

Teaching cultural elements of the English speaking countries in a foreign language context has not received much attention since the majority of EFL classes prioritise the acquisition of the traditional four skills. However, in the field of field of linguistics and sociolinguists, there seems to be a growing awareness of the fact that mastering the cultural competency of a language is a central requirement to communicate effectively in any language. Besides, research has found evidence to support the positive effects of implementing cultural elements of the English speaking countries. In this regard, the present experimental study not only attempts to explore whether a culturally-based teaching has an effect on the language learning of those learning English, but also discover the attitudes and beliefs of some EFL teachers and children in relation to the importance given to the target culture in the EFL classes and how it could be taught. A group of 25 children aged ten and eleven-year-old from a primary school and a group of 10 EFL teacher from different centres were recruited for this study. Exposing an English speaking country to the 5th grade group during 10 sessions and giving different questionnaires, quizzes and a test was the practice used to analyse both the benefits that a culturally-based teaching might have and the importance given to the target culture. Results of the present study show that providing students with cultural elements of the English speaking countries results in learners being more motivated, attentive, open-minded, curious and cosmopolitan.

Ensenyar aspectes culturals dels països de parla anglesa no és molt freqüent a les classes d’anglès d’avui en dia, ja que la majoria d’elles prioritzen l’ensenyament aprenentatge de les 4 habilitats tradicionals. Això no obstant, des de l’àmbit de lingüística i sociolingüística, es vol conscienciar a les persones que per comunicar-se de manera correcta amb una llengua es necessita conèixer la cultura del seu idioma. Per canviar-ne la imatge i donar més importància a l’ensenyament de la cultura dels països de parla anglesa, diversos treballs de recerca dels últims anys han afegit que pot aportar beneficis si s’implementés. Per aquest motiu, l’objectiu d’aquest estudi no és sols observar si ensenyar aspectes culturals dels països de parla anglesa pot aportar beneficis a aquells qui l’estudien, sinó també conèixer quina opinió en tenen alumnes i docents sobre el paper de la cultura i com s’hauria d’ensenyar. 25 nens d’uns 10-11 anys d’una escola, així com 10 docents d’anglès de diverses centres han participat en aquest projecte amb la finalitat d’analitzar la importància que té la cultura dels països de parla anglesa, així com els avantatges que pot tenir una instrucció d’aquest tipus. A banda de la instrucció que han rebut els alumnes, també s’ha fet servir qüestionaris, quizzes i una prova per poder recollir informació i acabar concloent que l’ensenyament d’aspectes culturals dels països de parla anglesa apart de formar persones cosmopolites, també aconsegueix que els alumnes estiguin motivats, atents, curiosos i oberts de ment.
