Traducció i comentari d’un fragment del relat “The Giants and the Joneses”

Abstract

La traducció literària no és tasca fàcil, ja que no només s’ha de traduir un text; també s’ha de transmetre un missatge. Per aquest motiu, s’ha de comprendre perfectament el text de partida, saber traslladar els referents culturals d’un idioma a l’altre i tenir sempre en ment el públic a qui va dirigida l’obra. L’objectiu principal d’aquest treball és la traducció i l’anàlisi d’un fragment d’un relat infantil anomenat The Giants and the Joneses. La peculiaritat principal d’aquest text és que inclou un idioma inventat per l’autora. D’aquesta manera, el treball està compost per la traducció dels deu primers capítols i un anàlisi de les traduccions de l’idioma inventat i dels possibles errors i problemes que ens podíem trobar en el moment de la traducció per arribar a trobar una solució adequada amb l’ajuda dels recursos adients.

Literary translation is not an easy process. It’s not only the translation of a text; you also have to pass on a message. This is why you need to fully understand the source text, know how to transfer cultural elements from one language to the other and to always have the target audience in mind. The main aim of this paper is the translation and the analysis of an excerpt from the novel for children The Giants and the Joneses. Its uniqueness is the language that the author made up for it. In this way, the paper is composed of the translation of the first ten chapters and the analysis of the translations for the made up words and for the possible mistakes and problems we could encounter during the translation, to reach a suitable solution with the help from the appropriate resources.
