Abundancia y distribución de microplásticos y posibles impactos sobre el rorcual común (Balaenoptera physalus) en las costas del Garraf

Abstract

En este Trabajo de Final de Grado se exponen los resultados del estudio realizado con la asociación EDMAKTUB durante el “Proyecto Rorcual”, que tiene como objetivo el estudio del rorcual común (B. physalus), que puede encontrarse durante los meses de Febrero a Junio en las costas catalanas del Garraf, cerca de Barcelona. Aprovechando este proyecto, se llevo a cabo un estudio preliminar de la concentración de microplásticos en las aguas superficiales de la costa del Garraf. Los objetivos principales de este trabajo fueron determinar la abundancia, características (forma, color, medida) y la distribución espacial de los microplásticos en esta zona costera, donde el rorcual común (B. physalus) tiene su área de distribución. Para llevar a cabo el estudio se recogieron un total de 15 muestras con una red cónica de plancton de 60 cm de longitud. Las muestras se analizaron con una lupa estereoscópica y se separaron según su tamaño, color y forma. Además, una vez obtenidos los datos, se creó un mapa mediante un SIG, donde quedaba reflejada la distribución de los microplásticos según su tamaño y la distribución de los avistamientos de rorcual común (B. physalus). El análisis de las muestras ha permitido identificar un total de 514 partículas de microplásticos, de un tamaño predominante > de 2 mm, de las cuales la gran mayoría eran fibras de colores fríos como azul o negro. Además, mediante el uso de SIG, se ha comparado la distribución de avistamientos de rorcual común (B. physalus) con la distribución de microplásticos en la zona. Los resultados han demostrado que existe un riesgo de que el rorcual común (B. physalus) se esté alimentando de estas micropartículas de forma involuntaria.

This Final Degree Project shows the results of the study done with EDMAKTUB association during the “Fin whale Project”. The main goal of this project is to study the fin whale (B. physalus) that can be found between February and June on the coast of Garraf near Barcelona. Taking advantage of this project, we have done a preliminary study of the concentration of microplastics in surface waters of the Garraf coast. The main goal of this project is to determine the abundance, characteristics (size, color, shape) and the spatial distribution of microplastics in the area of study, where the fin whale (B. physalus) has its distribution area. To carry out this study we collected 15 samples, with a conical net of plankton. The samples were analyzed with a stereomicroscope and separated by size, colour and shape. Once the data was obtained, a map was created by GIS software to show the distribution of the microplastics according to the size and also the distribution of the fin whale (B. physalus) The analysis of samples showed a total of 514 particles of microplastics with a predominant size of > 2 mm, of which the vast majority were fibers of cool colors like blue or black. In addition, by using GIS, it has been possible to compare the distribution of fin whale (B. physalus) sightings with the distribution of microplastics in the area. The results have shown that there is a risk that fin whales (B. physalus) were unintentionally feeding of these microplastics.
